How to give a free product and a discount on the cart at the same time

You can run a promotion that gives away a product and still takes money off the cart total, using a single coupon. This article shows you how to set both parts up on one coupon in Advanced Coupons, and how to check the result in the cart. The example gives away one unit of Product A and takes $10.00 off the cart.

Before you start

• Advanced Coupons Premium must be installed and active. The Add Products tab is a premium feature.
• Have the product you want to give away already published in your store.

Add the free product

1. Go to Coupons > All Coupons and open the coupon you want to use, or go to Coupons > Add New to create one.
2. Open the Add Products tab.
3. Add the product you want to give away.
4. Enter the quantity, for example 1.
5. Set the discount type to make the product free. Choose Percentage discount and enter 100, or choose Override price and enter 0.

Advanced Coupons adds the product to the cart automatically once the coupon is applied and any other conditions on the coupon are met.

Add the cart discount

1. Open the General tab.
2. Set Discount type to Fixed cart discount.
3. Enter the amount in Coupon amount, for example 10.
4. Publish or update the coupon.

Check the result

Apply the coupon in the cart. The free product is added and the cart discount comes off the total at the same time.

Troubleshooting

The free product is not added. Check that the Add Products tab lists the product and that the quantity is at least 1. Then check whether any cart condition on the same coupon is still unmet, because the products are only added once the coupon actually applies.

The product is added but is not free. Reopen the Add Products tab and check the discount type on that row. Percentage discount must be 100, and Override price must be 0.

The cart discount is missing. The cart discount comes from the General tab, not the Add Products tab. Check that Discount type is Fixed cart discount and that Coupon amount is set.
