How to give a discount on a product that has never been purchased before

When you launch a product, you often want the introductory discount to reach new buyers only, not the customers who already own it. You can do that with a cart condition that checks a customer’s order history. This article shows you how to build that coupon in Advanced Coupons for WooCommerce.

Before you start

  • The Customer Has Ordered Products Before cart condition needs Advanced Coupons Premium.
  • Have the product you want to discount already published.

Set the discount

  1. Open the coupon and go to the General tab.
  2. Set the discount type and the amount.

Limit the coupon to the product

  1. Open the Usage restriction tab.
  2. Select the product you want to discount.

Limit the coupon to one use per customer

This step is optional. Use it if each customer should only get the introductory price once.

  1. Open the Usage limits tab.
  2. Set the limit per user to 1.

Exclude customers who already bought the product

  1. Find the Cart Conditions section.
  2. Add the Customer Has Ordered Products Before condition.
  3. Set Type to Within a period.
  4. Set No. of previous days to 0. A value of 0 means the condition looks at the customer’s whole order history instead of a recent window.
  5. Select the same product you discounted.
  6. Set the comparison to LESS THAN and the value to 1, which means the customer has never ordered it.
  7. Update the coupon.

Troubleshooting

An existing buyer still gets the discount. Check No. of previous days on the cart condition. Any value above 0 only looks that far back, so an older purchase is ignored. Set it to 0 to cover the full order history.

Nobody can use the coupon. Check that the comparison is LESS THAN with a value of 1, not MORE THAN. Reversing it excludes exactly the customers you want to reach.

The discount applies to the wrong products. Check the Usage restriction tab. The cart condition decides who qualifies, and the usage restriction decides which product is discounted.
